ASP, PHP and Perl are dynamic technologies running on the server, which means that when the user requests an ASP, PHP or Perl document, the program is run within the server and the user only receives the HTML (webpage) produced by the program. The main advantage to these technologies lies in the security they bring to the process, as the code is only found on the server and the user only receives the resulting page in their browser; the user has no access to the code involved.
