Generally, there are no special requirements to register a new gTLD (generic Top-Level Domain). However, the impact that it will have on your brand is going to be tremendous. Once you have successfully registered a gTLD, your website will be running on a URL address that is unique, smart, secure and legitimate.
New gTLD registration may be done in any of the following periods:
1. Sunrise Period - A 30-day public notice about the recently available gTLDs will be issued. Owners of a registered trademark will be prioritized and it will be validated by the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). The purpose of this stage is to prevent cybersquatters and spoof/scam websites.
2. Landrush Period - This is the stage that comes after the sunrise period. At this stage, premium domains are sold on a first-com-first-serve basis or via auction. It is not required to be a trademark holder but limitations may apply.
3. General Availability Period - This is the final stage and any person may register a new gTLD of his/her choice.
Some gTLD Registries may request other requirements to be met. Interested in registering a new gTLD? Contact us now!
