There is a system in place to release .BR domains that were previously registered but have since expired or been deleted. Before being made available again for registration, the .BR authorities release the names through a special process.

There are two types of domain release, depending on the demand for the name:

• The “release process”: The Brazilian domain registry will publish specific dates when the names will be released. The list of domains is made public 2 days before the process begins.
• The “competitive process”: When there is more than one registrant interested in the domain, an auction will be held to award the name to the higher bidder.
